June 2018 Video & Discussion: The Longest Journey – Carlos Rodriguez

Download Discussion Questions ›

“God is love.”  Ok sure.  Most of us have heard this, somewhere.  And, many of us would readily assent to the concept, that somehow, yes, God is love.  But what does that really mean, and what does that love look like. For you, and me, in our real lives?

The longest journey, according to Carlos Rodriguez, is the process of the revelation that God is love making it the 18 inches from our heads to our hearts.  While many of us wouldn’t dare to disagree with the statement, intellectually, our own family, life, and religious experiences have taught us something different.  And, so, we experience dissonance.

In this talk from #SimplyJesus2017, Carlos helps us take one more step on that longest journey, as we look at tangible love expressed through Jesus and realize that his extravagant, grace-filled love extends even to us.

    1. “God is Love.” Do you believe it as abstract or personal truth? Why or why not?

    2. How have your personal history and life experiences influenced the way that you understand the love of God? When you imagine God in your mind’s eye, what do you see?

    3. Spend some time with the following miracle stories of Jesus. Maybe ask your self where you see yourself in the story. What does each story communicate to you about the love of God?

      a.     Jesus Calms the Storm: Mark 4:35-41

      b.     Possessed Man: Mark 5:1-20

      c.      Jesus Cleanses a Leper: Matthew 8:1-4

    4. Spend some time in Luke 15, with the story of the Prodigal Son. Do you believe God loves you in spite of your failures or successes? Where do you see yourself in this story? Is it easy or difficult for you to imagine God running to and embracing you, in the way the father in the story embraces the son?
